The golden plates were the plates that Mormon and Moroni had inscribed the Book of Mormon on. The Angel Moroni led Joseph Smith, Jr. to the place they were buried in the hill which would be called Cumorah. Joseph Smith with divine aid translated much of the golden plates and published the translation.
